WAHFE Goes on a Raw Food Kick!

I've been on the Uncooking School's email list since last year but after participating in a weekly raw food exchange between friends, I have been inspired to move to the next level and join the "Ultimate Raw Food Jump Start".  I'll be learning more about how to simplify raw food preparation and becoming certified as a Living Food Chef!

My husband and kids have really enjoyed everything I'm making and bringing home from the food exchange.  While we're not 100% raw, we are definitely enjoying a much higher raw diet.  I am using more nuts and seeds than I would like to, but I feel like it's necessary as I'm experimenting.  Hopefully I can figure out how I can start to cut down by the end of summer!

Anyhow, the Jump Start starts July 31st, so if you are interested in more information or want to join you can go to The Uncooking School website.

Also, don't forget to check my website Recipe Index for archived raw recipes and of course you can look forward to more upcoming raw food posts :)

Raw Snacks for Kids: "Fairy Cakes"

This is a simple raw food snack kids can make themselves.  My daughter has been making this one by herself for a couple of years.  You simply take a banana and slice it up.  Dust it with cinnamon and then roll the banana slices in raw shredded coconut.  You can stack the slices to make what looks like "little fairy cakes".  These are fun snacks that the kids can make for a tea party too!

For a frozen treat you can toss frozen slices of banana in cocoa powder and it gives you a much healthier version of the "chocolate dipped banana".

Cafe 118 Restaurant with the Kids

I decided to take the kids to Cafe 118 this week as a treat, seeing how I had a nice $25 off coupon from Restaurant.com.  (Thanks Patience!)   I've only taken the kids to have a smoothie, not a sit down meal, so they were excited about it.

I let the kids pick what they what they wanted but the rule was we had to be under $50.  So here's what we got to share between the three of us:

Spiced Macadamia Hummus
Sundried Tomato and herb flax Crackers

Mexican Chopped Salad
Spinach, Sweet Corn, Avocado, Corn Chips, Cherry Tomato, and "Queso Blanco" crumbles

Pad Thai
Zucchini and Carrot "noodles", tossed in Pad Thai Sauce, Drizzled with Sesame Cashew Glaze

'Smores
Cinnamon graham cracker with a cashew creme filling topped with cocoa sauce

The only thing they enjoyed was the hummus and the salad. Everything else was either "too spicy" or "didn't taste right". The Pad Thai was way spicier than what I like so of course it was too spicy for them. I should have asked about that, but now I know.   I also forgot to ask for the dressing on the salad to be on the side- it was too much oil.  Well seeing how we don't use oil at home, anything with oil in it is too much.

If you have tried Cafe 118 with your kids, what menu items did they like?  Post in the comments below!
